When was the school founded and by whom?
The Rev. James Menaul, a Presbyterian Minister and founder of First Presbyterian Church of Albuquerque, New Mexico, sought and received Presbyterian mission funding for a boarding school that would serve Spanish speaking boys from northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Thus, in January, 1896 Menaul School was established and at its current site.
How has Menaul changed?
Through the years the school expanded its mission to include students from any race, ethnicity, or locale. Many students from foreign countries have attended. The boarding program was discontinued in 2000 and today most students are from the greater Albuquerque area and surrounding communities. Students from outside the immediate area and foreign students still attend, some living with host families and others traveling considerable distances each day to attend school.
What percent of the students come from different racial and ethnic groups?
Generally speaking over 60% of students are of Hispanic, Native American, and other minority racial/ethnic descent. Forty percent (40%) are of anglo descent.
What is the campus like?
Situated on 35 acres in Albuquerque's north valley, the tree shaded campus provides a quiet, secluded, college-like environment. The school has 12 buildings, including a gym, soccer and football fields and tennis courts.
Do you have to be Presbyterian or Christian to attend?
No, students from all religious backgrounds are welcome. In the words of the school's mission, our environment is "ecumenical", while respecting its "Christian tradition"
What do the words on the school seal, Sea La Luz, mean?
The literal translation of Sea La Luz is "Let there be light", taken from the 3rd verse of the 1 chapter of the Old Testament book of Genesis. For more than 110 years, Menaul School has sought to dispel the darkness of ignorance and injustice by fostering the light of education and community in and among its students. With this educational background, our studuents have excelled in all walks of life, enlightened by an education rooted in respect for culture, history, tradition and spirituality. So, infact, literally translated and applied, Menaul, through its teachers, staff, students, parents and alumni has continued to separate the darkness of ignorance and falsehood by allowing the light of enlightenment and truth to shine for over a century.
